THE ARCHIVE AND DOCUMENTATION CENTRE

As part of its mission to preserve and optimise its industrial heritage, the BERLIET Foundation set up an archive and documentation centre in 1982, soon after its creation, with a storage capacity today of some 3,000 linear metres over 4 floors. |

Today, we have archives on 370 French trucks and Lyon car makes, spread over something like 800 linear metres. There are also documents laid out over 1,000 linear metres, including: 9,500 diagrams and drawings, 1,500 publications, 1,100 posters, 80,000 photos, 800 films, 5,000 different works. |

These resources have been patiently built up from a very large number of donations from the BERLIET family, from RENAULT VI personnel and then from RENAULT TRUCKS personnel – previously BERLIET or SAVIEM, – from journalists and all those interested in our industrial past in the construction of trucks and cars. To manage these stocks, the staff of the archive and documentation centre comprises 3 archive research assistants, aided by 30 or so volunteers, most of whom are former automobile industry managers. They are organised into work groups to sort the archives or write up what now amounts to over 100 works on the functions of the companies where they worked, key equipment and makes that no longer exist. |

The centre is in the process of being computerised and manages its own database of over 27,000 references, a number that is growing regularly. |

Apart from internal research, research assistants respond to requests from students, middle and secondary-school children, researchers, journalists, writers, aficionados and collectors of vehicles, personnel from Renault Trucks and other companies. It also takes on archivist and research assistant trainees. The stocks of documentation kept at the foundation have provided substance for over 30 Masters and PhD theses in History, History of Art, Geography, Urban Planning, Economics, etc… |
